BLINC’s solidarity work currently involves women’s organisations, trade unions and Fairtrade producers. We work with UNISON branches in Bristol and with counterpart UNE in Nicaragua, with support from the NSC. Workers here have funded health and safety equipment for rubbish collectors in Puerto Morazan. Bristol workers have also funded their Nica colleagues to attend national congresses in Managua, the capital. Our women’s work focusses on organising a contribution to International Women’s Day keynote Nicaraguan women speakers plus films. We have sent money to the “legalize therapeutic abortion” campaign in Nicaragua and raise awareness of this important issue. We bring a woman Fairtrade producer from Nicaragua to undertake two weeks of schools work during Fairtrade Fortnight each year. Plus we support the Lucrecia Lindo and Esperanza women’s co-operatives in Puerto Morazan.
